Aluminium is a material which has a seductive aesthetic quality aligned with a contemporary tone. The first works on aluminium were undertaken in 1987, and the material has been used intermittently ever since, with textual work, mixed media work, figurative work, and even as drawings.
The human form as a fundamental expression has led to the on-going series of figures, which blur gender and sexual identity, and reflect upon alienation, vulnerability and mortality. Structurally, the works have neither background nor foreground, or any sense of solidity; the figures and their surrounds - the aluminium - represent the same existing elementary particles. Typically, the titles have come from quantum physics and cosmology; for example, Up Down Strange Charm Top and Bottom are quarks, the smallest as yet known particles of matter in existence.
